AN INTRICATE JOURNEY THROUGH THE MIND OF AN INTERIOR DESIGNER SEEKING RELEVANCE AMIDST A RICH,BUT CHAOTIC URBAN SOCIETY.....
Albert Hadley, a renowned interior design legend describes his joy from the work of his hands "Designing is really about creating a quality of life, and the beauty in that life nourish the soul and makes life beautiful. That is what interior designing is about, not just what's in and what's out".
Undoubtedly, interior designing goes beyond being trendy it's about providing beautiful and satisfying spaces that put a smile on the faces of the viewers. The tremendous joy and feeling derived from viewing an amazing interior space cannot be over emphasized and can be appreciated all around us.
Swing open the doors to a reception hall and be welcomed by the array of colours and well placed company logos, the yellow colour in the kitchen that evokes the house wife to put red or green in her pot and provide sumptuous meals for members of her family or walk into a five-star hotel and get carried away by the breath taking ceiling designs and walls that must have been inspired from the paint brush of nature.
These are just a few of the plethora beauties derived from the creative works of an interior designer, a profession that can be attained by a sedulous youth who do not want his hands to be tied by the cruel grip of laziness.
Interior design concepts have long been here for centuries as can be seen in history with the ancient Egyptians for example, who formed the first of the great classical civilization while most of Europe were still in the stone age. The Egyptians applied creative designs to build palaces and timeless tombs that would have even made the dead smile as they were put in such magnificent structures. Their design concepts made them stand out even centuries later as they used visual impact and symbolic presentation in designing their homes. From the Mayas of Mexico, to the French Rococo even down to the Igbokwe and Nupe traditions in Nigeria, interior design concepts were made evident in their beautiful designs.
Nigeria is a country teemed with vibrant youths possessing creative minds and abilities anxiously waiting to burst into the scene and be part of productive development in the country. Sadly though, most youths have been made to believe that success mainly comes from relying on the government to provide for them or chasing after white collar jobs that only a few in the end are fortunate to get a hold of while others may decide to throw in the towel and get misdirected in their quest for a successful career path.
The unemployment rate in the country seem to be exacerbating and is quite discouraging as reports from the National Bureau of Statistics indicates. As a result, the need for job creation across the country is being emphasized especially as regards handiwork in order to boost the economy and reduce youth restiveness.
For this reason, interior design training is particularly recommended as it serves as a platform for showcasing creative ideas and thinking such abilities that are ubiquitous among Nigerian youths.
Interior design training is increasingly important to our need for a sustainable and contemporary way of life. The training encapsulates a rare combination of keen creativity and specialist practical skills from free hand drawing and vignettes to product model-making. It provides a basis for employment in a range of design areas like offices, homes, hotels and other property-related spaces. It opens up the opportunity for youths to broaden their horizons and use creative ideas that can be inspired from nature, life experiences and all what not.
Obviously, every youth desires to step up on the ladder of success and be satisfied with the works of their hands. This is what training as an interior designer offers. So as you think about using your hands to write the next application letter to yet another company, think about using those hands to provide beautiful and creative designs in a space that would stupefy the viewers or clients and put a smile on the faces of others. Then, like Albert Hadley you can concur that beautiful designs nourish the soul, makes life beautiful and evidently your pockets wider.
Finally, as a wise king whose homes and palaces displayed interior design in it's highest order, King Solomon confesses that the work of the hands brings satisfying joy.
